Directorate of Integrated Waste Management and Pollution Abatement

Sub Directorate: Integrated Waste Management

The sub-directorate Integrated Waste Management aims to achieve sustainable improvement of waste management standards in Gauteng by supporting the national and local levels of government, as well as private and industrial waste managers. This includes:

  • The development of provincial waste related policies and strategies
  • The encouraging of waste minimisation
  • Monitoring of waste management activities
  • Information collection and sharing
  • Ensuring implementation of national strategies and policies
  • Impact Assessment Management : Items 8 and 9 of Schedule 1 of the Environmental Conservation Act (Act no. 73 of 1989).
  • Monitoring compliance to EIA conditions set in relation to waste related activities
  • General Waste management
  • Hazardous/Industrial waste management
  • Health Care Risk waste management
  • Promotion of Cleaner production and energy efficiency
  • Capacity development within local authority
  • The sub-directorate provides environmental comment on applications for Mining activities within the province
  • Integrated environmental management, on a directorate level, of the Sedibeng geographical area
